Golomoti Solar Inauguration

His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi with JCM CEO, Christian Wray.

JCM Power is proud to announce that its 20MWac (28.5MWp) Golomoti Solar + BESS project in Malawi has reached commercial operations. The Golomoti project is Malawi’s second solar IPP after JCM’s Salima solar project and proudly boasts the first utility-scale grid-connected battery energy storage system in Sub-Saharan Africa (5MW/10MWh), having connected to the grid in December 2021. JCM Power managed the procurement and construction for the project and is providing O&M services for the life of the facility.

The project welcomed His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, and other key stakeholders at an inauguration ceremony on June 6, 2022 to commemorate this important milestone. We were joined by our co-development partners @InfraCoAfrica, who remain long-term investors in the project alongside JCM Power.

This project, a utility-scale solar + BESS project, is the first of its kind in Malawi and the largest of its kind across Sub-Saharan Africa.  For its ingenuity, it was awarded the Battery Storage Project of the Year by IJGlobal in 2021. The project consists of 52,300 highly efficient bifacial solar panels, spans approximately 105 hectares of land, and is expected to produce an average of more than 50 GWh of clean energy each year for the next 20+ years.
