Project Overview

JCM has been developing a 60 MW AC (75.6 MW DC) solar photovoltaic project in the Salima district of the Republic of Malawi since mid‐2013. JCM signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi Limited (ESCOM) and obtained all the permits and Land Agreements. An Implementation Agreement (IA) was also been signed with the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Energy.

The project entered commercial operation in October 2021.

MARKET OVERVIEW

ESCOM, the government-owned utility in Malawi, initiated a tender for four solar PV projects in December of 2016. Although JCM had previously been negotiating a bilateral agreement with the utility, this showed a strong commitment to the solar PV progress and ESCOM’s desire to create a competitive environment in Malawi. The Government continues to show strong support towards renewable energy development in country and the project continues to make progress on the implementation agreement. Malawi’s $350 million Millennium Challenge Corporation compact still continues to be implemented with a focus on reducing poverty by improving the availability, reliability and quality of the power supply, expanding access to power, reducing the cost of doing business, and revitalizing Malawi’s power sector.
