Environmental & Social Governance Director
Alan is the Environmental and Social Governance (ESG) Director of JCM responsible for leading on the creation, implementation, and monitoring of ESG processes and policies across the company and its subsidiaries, in compliance with international best practices, IFC Performance Standards, and applicable local/national legislation.
With over 12 years’ experience in environmental and social management, Alan has worked on over 80 projects for more than 60 clients across 21 countries in Africa. His experience spans the entire project lifecycle from exploration/site identification through pre-feasibility to feasibility, to operation and closure for power, mining, infrastructure, industry and oil and gas sectors. This includes conducting site identification, screening and scoping studies, baseline studies, impact assessments, monitoring, and management planning and implementation as well as audit and environmental and social due diligence studies, and public consultation processes for local regulatory permitting processes, as well as project finance and development finance institutions requirements in line with international best practice standards.
Prior to joining JCM Alan was a Principal Consultant at the global sustainability consultancy ERM (Environmental Resources Management) based in South Africa. Early in his career, Alan worked for Golder Associates Africa as a specialist and project manager in the field of biodiversity where he developed core competencies in environmental management, project management and coordination, environmental monitoring, wetland ecology, biodiversity offsets, and ecosystem goods and services. In the latter half of his career, he moved to ERM and into broader environmental project management assisting clients in managing their ESG risks for project developments and investments.
Alan holds a Bachelor’s degree in Geography and Environmental Studies and an Honours Degree in Environmental Management from the University of Johannesburg
